We’re looking for a Lead/Principal Software Engineer to join our thriving team in the centre of Brighton. You’ll play a pivotal role in leading, architecting and creating amazing experiences across the digital products and services we create with our clients, using your experience and enthusiasm to bring ideas to life.

This is a hybrid role (Tuesdays & Fridays in the Brighton office).

What you’ll bring

You have experience providing technical leadership and being accountable for the development of web and mobile applications, from discovery to release
You have strong interpersonal communication skills and are used to working in cross functional teams and liaising with key stakeholders
You have made significant contributions to many areas of client or internal projects and systems, and demonstrate the ability to lead conversations to improve outcomes across projects and teams
You have demonstrable experience supporting and mentoring an engineering team to improve ways of working and grow technical domain knowledge
You have extensive knowledge of the key phases of the software delivery lifecycle, and use established software development methodologies within cross-functional teams
You love working to complex and challenging client briefs using a fast-paced agile approach

What you’ll be doing

Working with other engineers, designers, project managers and key stakeholders to understand the objectives, requirements and options for new or existing projects
Leading on the design architecture and development of high-performance and scalable applications using proven approaches, frameworks and technologies
Working closely with other developers and product designers to plan, architect and create high-quality mobile or web solutions that are human-centric, high quality and delightful to use
Delivering well thought through technical project solutions that exceed client expectations and are delivering on time and budget
Supporting and leading other engineers through mentoring and coaching, and providing feedback where necessary
Working within cross-functional teams using an Agile development process, contributing to the approach, technical specification and user experience of the products we create
Regularly contributing to marketing and promoting the agency by writing blog posts and representing ASquared at conferences and meet-up events

What you’ll need

8+ years of experience coding commercial React and/or React Native and/or Flutter applications
5+ years experience in writing Typescript
Fullstack, Node.js and ideally Next.js development experience
Cloud coding experience - architecting, developing and deploying backend applications in cloud environments such as Google Cloud/Firebase and/or AWS
Prompt engineering experience to integrate with OpenAI, Google Gemini or other popular LLMs
Leadership and mentoring experience with software engineers
Experience working within multidisciplinary, cross-functional teams in an agile environment
Extensive experience working with other developers on a shared codebase, providing, receiving and acting upon code reviews
Excellent communication skills, where you can ‘keep it simple’ and make complicated details and problems understandable to a non-technical audience
Experience working in Figma and working closely with product designers
An advocate of good practice processes for software feature rollouts, migration and AB testing
Be a role model for good practice when documenting code and writing technical architecture
Solid experience of Test Driven Development, Unit and UI Testing engineering principles

The nice-to-haves

Experience in Enterprise app development, SaaS app development and/or fast paced agency environments
Experience in Mobile app development such as React Native and/or Swift / Objective-C / Kotlin / Java
iOS and Android build & distribution process experience
Expo & EAS (Expo Application Services) - ideally both managed and bare workflows experience
Experience or familiarity with design systems and modular design process
